As I experimented with personal essays, I stumbled on this little-known, delicious practice: writing micro-memoirs.

The bar on writing a 200-page memoir, or even a 1,200-word personal essay, is high. You may be yearning for help with personal writing that’s more accessible: to articulate what it’s like to be you on an average Tuesday, to gain clarity and self-awareness, to find words adequate for your years of joy and heartbreak. All worthy pursuits.

But we only have so much time. Which is what I love about writing micro-memoirs: they're bite-sized, delectable, and make beautiful collections, too.

Like brain candy, I made each recording in Small Moments, True Stories, short and sweet, four minutes or less, so you can sample this practice before committing to more.

Over five days, I guide you to:

  1. Recall one small moment (a conversation, a gesture, a smell)

  2. Stay with the feeling it stirs in you

  3. Capture it in words that feel true

If your writing keeps getting put on the back burner, if writing about yourself is awkward, or if you want to uncover what you're really feeling and you’re drawn to putting words on a page, this series could be a tiny key that unlocks something inside you.
